Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones talks to the media following Sam Williams' arrest.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones still knows how to catch us off guard. Following the arrest of defensive end Sam Williams last week, Jones spoke to the media on Wednesday and provided a wild take on the situation.

"First of all, I’m seeing that he is, which is more often the case than not, this sounds a little hollow, but he does and is maturing," Jones told reporters via the FOX 4 NEWS clip below. "What was he going, 66? Was he going 66 miles per hour? So, he’s 34 miles an hour less this year than he was last year. Ninety-eight to 66, that’s an improvement."

That sure is one way to look at it. And if we're being totally honest, a hilarious quote from the Cowboys owner.

Last Sunday, Williams was arrested "on charges of possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) and unlawful carrying of a weapon," per Forth Worth Star-Telegram.

The rising second-year defender, considered by many one of the biggest candidates for a breakout season this year, did practice with the Cowboys on Tuesday and Wednesday. The NFL could suspend Williams but Jones indicated he doesn't expect the league to hand that punishment to the young player.

Williams is a big part of the Cowboys' plans in 2023 as he's expected to play way more than he did as a rookie. In 2022, he had outstanding production while playing in about one quarter of the defensive snaps. That's all it took for him to get four sacks, 10 tackles for loss, one pass deflection, and one forced fumble.

If Williams can stay out of trouble, the Cowboys will cash in on his upside.
