The 49ers round off their preseason schedule on Friday when they host the Chargers at Levi's Stadium.

It marks a final chance for those hoping to make the 53-man roster to impress head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Much of the regular-season roster will be set, but this game offers an opportunity for those on the margins to further their case and advertise themselves to teams around the league.

And at least some of the contest will provide an opportunity to get a look at arguably the most critical player to the 49ers' hopes in a pressure-free environment before the real stuff begins.

Will the starters play?

Yes. Kyle Shanahan confirmed after last week's win over the Broncos that the starters would play at least some of the finale. Those comments likely won't apply to left tackle Trent Williams and running back Christian McCaffrey, and it remains to be seen if the Niners will risk George Kittle coming off an adductor injury, but quarterback Brock Purdy and the likes of Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and Fred Warner should be on the field.

How will the QB reps be shared?

This game will likely be the last in which we see Trey Lance on the field for the 49ers for some time and it could even prove his final appearance for San Francisco, with trade talk an unsurprising consequence of him losing the battle for the backup quarterback role to Sam Darnold. After Purdy exits the game, the 49ers may want to get Darnold more reps ahead of the regular season now he is confirmed as QB2, so Lance's time on the field against the Chargers could prove limited.

3 Players to Watch

  • Jaylon Moore, OT: The 49ers' backup offensive line has emerged as the most significant problem on their roster, with Moore failing to inspire faith he can be a reliable swing tackle. Moore, who suffered a bone bruise a week before the 49ers' join practices with the Raiders, has given up a team-high five pressures in preseason, per Pro Football Focus. He'll need a solid display here to prevent the 49ers from potentially looking at alternatives such as encouraging rookie UDFA Ilm Manning.
  • Ronnie Bell, WR: Bell's place on the roster should be secured after his magnificent seven-catch, 114-yard performance against the Broncos last week. One thing he'll want to cut out ahead of the regular season is drops. Bell has let two would-be catches go through his hands, both leading to interceptions.
  • Deommodore Lenoir, CB: The 49ers are still figuring out their nickel corner situation, with the primary solution appearing to be one that sees starter Lenoir play inside on clear passing downs with Ambry Thomas taking his outside spot. Though Lenoir started last season at nickel, he played only six snaps there last week against the Broncos, so more evidence of him excelling in that capacity may be needed for the Niners to feel comfortable in their plan ahead of the regular season.
