Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Tayven Jackson knows if he'll be the Indiana Hoosiers' starter this fall, but he can't tell anyone just yet.
Jackson, who transferred to Indiana earlier this offseason after spending one season at Tennessee, is in a quarterback battle with Brendan Sorsby, a redshirt freshman who appeared in one game for the Hoosiers last season.
Indiana head coach Tom Allen said this week that he's made a decision and he's informed both quarterbacks of his decision, but a public announcement won't be made before the Hoosiers kick off the 2023 season on September 2 against Ohio State.
"So we have a decision, and no, we’re not going to announce it," said Allen earlier this week.
"I won't get too specific," continued Allen while discussing meeting with each quarterback. "So basically, just open, honest conversations with them, and they know exactly where things are right now and where it stands. And so you just bring them in, you shoot them straight, and I really complimented them about how they've handled the situation as teammates."
"I've been a part of several of these over the years, and so that doesn't always have the same feel to it like it does with this group," added Allen. "And they have such respect for each other and are really great teammates for one another. So, obviously they know they're trying to compete to play one spot, so that's always a challenging thing."
(That last part sounds a lot like the quarterback room that Jackson just left at Tennessee…which isn't a surprise considering Jackson has been very open about how much he learned from Joe Milton and Hendon Hooker.)
The Herald Times predicted earlier this week that Jackson will be Indiana's starter against the Buckeyes, so it appears to be trending toward the former Vol starting in Week One.
But we can't be sure that will be the case. Allen is determined to keep his starting quarterback under wraps for the next week, presumably to keep Ohio State guessing.
