The former No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft has found a new home.
According to numerous reports, the San Francisco 49ers have shipped Trey Lance off to the Dallas Cowboys for a late-round draft pick. This comes after Sam Darnold was named as Brock Purdy's backup quarterback just days ago.
Lance has appeared in just eight games with four career starts since 2021, completing 56 passes for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. He's also ran for a touchdown and 235 yards rushing on 54 attempts. In 2022, he suffered a season-ending ankle injury just two games into the season.
49ers GM John Lynch recently pushed back on claims that the team was shopping Lance, but this trade seems to suggest otherwise.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the 49ers will only receive a 2024 fourth-round draft pick in return. That's a bit surprising, given the wealth of draft capital that the 49ers used to move up to acquire Lance back in 2021. Recent reports indicated that NFL executives believed San Francisco could earn a third-round pick.
Perhaps the most unique part of this trade is that Lance is staying in the NFC, and he's going to a team with a lot of history with the 49ers. The Cowboys have met the 49ers nine times during the postseason, including several meetings in the NFC Championship Game (1970, 1971, 1981, 1992, 1993, and 1994). Often times, these two teams have been the last standing in the way of a Super Bowl berth.
It'll certainly be something worth monitoring in the future.
