Every general manager misses on some draft picks and Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry will likely have to cut ways with two of those very soon.

In the final Browns’ preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, there are two former draft picks who will likely see their time in orange and brown come to an end with one last showing.

When Andrew Berry drafted C Nick Harris in 2020 and WR Anthony Schwartz in 2021, he had bigger plans for them than what actually happened.

It is two very different situations for these former Cleveland draft picks on why it did not work out. Nick Harris finally expected to get his chance as the team’s starting center in 2022 after J.C. Tretter was let go, then a season-ending knee injury wiped out all of last season for him.

Harris’ job was overtaken by Ethan Pocic, who the Browns had signed last offseason to provide depth at the position. Unfortunately for Harris, Pocic stepped in and looked like one of the NFL’s better centers and never lost the job. Cleveland drafted Luke Wypler out of Ohio State, who figures to be the backup at the position until he can perhaps take over eventually.

It’s an unfortunate circumstance for Harris, who has worked his way back from a tough injury to try to find a role. Cleveland could keep Harris with Wypler showing some ability at guard in the preseason too, but it appears more likely the Browns just keep Wypler, their rookie that they have contract control of for the next four seasons. It is hard to see Cleveland keeping their former fifth-round pick, Harris.

Schwartz on the other hand, has had every opportunity he could ask for with the Browns. The former third-round pick peaked with the team in his very first game when he caught three passes for 69 yards. The Auburn product hasn’t had a game like that since.

Over the last two seasons, Schwartz has played in 25 games and has 186 receiving yards and a touchdown to show for it. In 2022, Schwartz caught just four passes in 11 games played. Cleveland drafted him for his track speed alone and he did show that on an end-around that he took to the end zone from 31 yards out last year.

Through this preseason, Schwartz has played late into all three games so far. That is a likely sign that he’s not going to crack the roster. He’s appeared to be passed up by a guy like Austin Watkins Jr., who has shown he belongs this preseason with the Browns.

In 2021, it’s easy to see that Schwartz was a miss on Berry. He hasn’t shown he can be an actual football player, instead, he’s just shown off his ability to run. In hindsight, the Browns should have never drafted a player off of speed alone. It didn’t work out for the Cincinnati Bengals and John Ross, it’s not working out for Cleveland and Schwartz.

One source told me that Schwartz may not play today due to a hamstring issue, so perhaps we’ve already seen his last snaps with the Browns. He’s a player that could end up on the practice squad here, or with another team.

Draft picks are very volatile and we’re going to see plenty of examples when cutdowns happen at the beginning of next week. Cleveland will have to part ways with a couple of their own, at least.
