Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is calling the plays on the team's preseason finale vs. the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday night, according to Michael Gehlken from the Dallas Morning News.
Prescott hasn't played in all of August as the coaching staff limits his preparation to the practice field. However, he'll get his feet wet on head coach Mike McCarthy's offense this weekend as he calls the plays instead of McCarthy himself.
The exercise isn't anything new in the NFL but it goes a long way in showing how serious McCarthy is about having Prescott "own" the new Texas Coast offense the Cowboys will be using during the 2023 regular season.
Giving the quarterback (expected to be Will Grier from start to finish) the call is a good way for Prescott to get mental reps. One has to assume it's also a good opportunity for McCarthy to peek into Dak's mind in a game setting.
Earlier this offseason, McCarthy explained the art of play-calling and how timing is a crucial part of it.
"The efficiency of play calling is getting the play in and the quarterback having as much possible time with that 40-second clock," McCarthy told reporters in June.
With this being Dak's eighth year in the NFL, he knows a thing or two about having a mental clock every single rep.
With Prescott calling the offense, he also has a chance to do Grier a solid. Following the Cowboys' trade for quarterback Trey Lance, Grier is expected to be a casualty ahead of Tuesday's cutdown deadline. The coaching staff reportedly plans to play Grier for four full quarters, likely to give him a chance to prove himself to the other 31 NFL teams.
