The roster bubble is one that will burst for some good players, but that's just how the NFL goes. Ultimately, the Saints will shoot to give their team the best possible depth and flexibility as the regular season begins in just under a couple of weeks.
There are three 'bubble' players that absolutely deserve a roster spot. I discussed them and their roles for the Saints below.
Ugo Amadi, Defensive Back
Amadi is an experienced piece with secondary versatility. He's played very well when on the field in the preseason. Amadi won't be a starter, but he can step in in case of injury. He's got good chemistry with the other players in the secondary already as well.
Don't forget Marcus Maye's situation, too. There's a possibility that he receives a short suspension from the NFL. If that happens, having a player like Amadi can go a long way for New Orleans. He's a player that deserves a depth role in the secondary and provides special teams playmaking ability.
Nephi Sewell, Linebacker
Sewell is an athletic, energetic depth linebacker for the Saints. I would give him the nod over other depth linebackers like Zack Baun, Ty Summers, and Nick Anderson. Sewell made multiple impact plays on special teams, and he provides more upside than some of the other options. He led the team in tackles during the preseason with ten.
Sewell had good reps alongside Jaylon Smith as well, so that is important as the two may get some paying time together if he makes the roster. Smith's spot is locked in – seemingly. His run-stopping talent is the best part of his development so far, and the Saints need better run defense in 2023.
Shaq Davis, Wide Receiver
Davis was arguably the biggest preseason star on offense for the Saints. In increased action, he showed off a good connection with the quarterbacks and impressive contested catch skills. At 6'5, he's a bigger target that the Saints don't really possess out wide.
Having different body types is important at WR in the NFL, and Davis provides that. Not to mention, the team will push the ball downfield more often with Derek Carr at QB. Davis could be a useful target for that part of the game plan.
