The Detroit Lions kind of shocked everyone Monday night when they waived former seventh round pick Chase Lucas after he had a good camp and a phenomenal preseason closer. It seemed liek he was a shoe in to make the Lions roster.
That cut didn't initially make sense, but when you consider how the rest of Monday went, it could point to bigger things for the Lions this week. Specifically moving Emmanuel Moseley off the PUP list.
"Emmanuel's doing well." Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell said when asked about Moseley on Monday. "He's somebody we'll discuss tonight on whether, do we do we keep him on PUP (physically unable to perform) or do we take him off? He's close. But he's doing well. He's not going to practice today, it's day to day. Hopefully know a lot more when they come back off this break on Saturday."
There has to be some correlation there right? If so, it would completely explain why the Lions had to make the hard choice of waving Lucas in favor of more than likely keeping Steven Gilmore and adding Moseley to 53 man roster. That's if the Lions take him off the PUP list.
If the Lions decide to keep Moseley on the PUP list they'd have to move him to the reserve/PUP list. If Moseley is on this list, he'd have to wait until Week 4 before he could play. This allows the team to keep him until he's ready to go and fully healthy.
That might be the route they go, but the Lucas cut makes it feel like they'll ultimately decide to take Moseley off the list and add him to the 53 man roster.
If that's the case, I would imagine that Moseley still misses the first game of the season due to only having a week of practice under his belt. If he does play, it'll probably be on a snap count. I would imagine he's on snap count if he doesn't debut until Week two as well. The Lions will probably start Jerry Jacobs and work Moseley in smaller amounts until he's fully ready to go.
We'll see what happens as the week goes along. Campbell mentioned Saturday, so we might not actually find out until then or the start of next week.
Lions Roster Cuts Tracker: Keeping tabs on all the 2023 decisions
The NFL offseason is officially over and unfortunately, nothing signals that more than Roster Cutdown Day. For the Detroit Lions, it's been all about depth. This team seems to have it all figured out when it comes to starters. Most of the battles we had our eyes on this summer were all about finding the […]
