As Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow took his seat at the podium on Wednesday to speak to reporters for the first time since he suffered a calf injury during training camp, the former LSU star jokingly pointed out how much he's missed his weekly media sessions.
"I've missed it so much," said Burrow sarcastically as he adjusted the microphone and settled into his seat.
Burrow doesn't necessarily hate doing media — he's a pro and he handles himself like a pro — but it's not his favorite thing in the world, either.
The superstar quarterback's parents, Robin and Jimmy, recently sat down with Cincinnati.com's Kelsey Conway on the Bengals Beat Podcast (the whole conversation is terrific and worth a listen) and the topic of speaking with the media came up.
Conway, who covers the Bengals in person on a daily basis, pointed out that while Burrow claims that media isn't his thing, he's still good at handling those duties.
Burrow's father said that's the case because Burrow accepts that it's part of his job.
"He just doesn't like time taken away from his preparation," said Jimmy Burrow in response's to Joe's "dislike" for doing media. "He respects the media, he knows it's part of his job. And being one of the leaders of the team, he gets it. And he is good at it. He knows how to beat around the bush…..but he appreciates all the work that he media does."
Some players don't like speaking to the media because they're leery of what might be written or said. That's not the case with Burrow. He just wants to spend more time preparing for his next game.
I doubt that comes as a surprise to any Bengals fans (or LSU fans). In fact, if you were to ask a group of Bengals/LSU fans why Burrow doesn't love speaking to the media, I bet quite a few would guess it's because it takes away from his preparation.
Joey B is Joey B for a reason.
