Who would have thought that after the season the Kansas City Chiefs just had, without Tyreek Hill and a cast of a bunch of random average wide receivers, they would go into Week 1 of 2023 and lose because of that?

Everyone watching the Thursday Night Football game saw the biggest problem for the Chiefs against the Detroit Lions. Sure, the defensive line could have been better, as they were missing Chris Jones to a holdout and Charles Omenihu to a suspension, but that wasn't why they lost.

It was a reason, don't get me wrong, but the bigger reason was the receivers, who couldn't seem to do much right on Thursday, leaving Patrick Mahomes with a bad-looking stat line that really isn't his fault.

The drops could have been better, among other things, like the inability to create separation. It's not the issue we thought the Chiefs would have, from the players we didn't think it would come from, but it happened. Mahomes was still making the plays he could, it just wasn't enough.

From my count, the Chiefs had nine drops on Thursday night. Most of them were from Kadarius Toney, who easily had his worst game. But Mahomes still trusts him.

"You know, I trust in KT," Mahomes started his presser. "He missed a lot of training camp. Obviously, he wanted to play and fought in rehab hard so he could play, and stuff will not always go your way. But I trust that he's going to be that guy that I go to in those moments, and he's going to make the catch and win us in seasons like he did last year. So we're going to continue to work with him in getting him more reps, and I'm sure those drops will disappear."

Toney isn't the only guy to blame, even though he had a drop go for a pick-six, as Rashee Rice had a drop, and Skyy Moore had more than one. They were everywhere, but as the quarterback, Mahomes does a good job of letting them know he still trusts them.

"I think they know that I'm going to keep firing it, and so we will try to get it fixed this next week and correct that here going into next week," Mahomes ended.

The drops must be fixed because if this same thing happens against the Jacksonville Jaguars, it won't be a close game.
