Even with everything the Kansas City Chiefs had going against them, whether it be the Chris Jones holdout, Charles Omenihu suspension, or the Travis Kelce injury, the Chiefs were still favored to win this game. So, there are no excuses.

So, because they were still favored, they were still the better team; this Thursday night's loss to the Detroit Lions means more than you may think.

If anything, this was a reality check, and some of the guys think the same, including Justyn Ross, who said it in the locker room, and Mahomes, who told the media that.

"It'll be good for the young guys to know that we're not just going to walk in and win the game," Mahomes told reporters. "You're going to have to play good football; we're going to play every team's best shot. I've preached it to them all preseason, but they know now. We're going to Jacksonville next week, and that's going to be a good football team, so hopefully, guys learn from it, get better, and this one loss doesn't turn into two."

This was more about all of the young guys, and there are a lot of them, now knowing that they can't just cruise to every win. This is more about showing those players that they can lose.

The reality check is crucial because the Chiefs had so many rookies come in last year, play crucial snaps, and win a Super Bowl as a rookie. So, of course, they will feel like that's just naturally supposed to happen.

But you must still do the work and play great football; it won't just happen. That's what the loss is about. Mahomes preached that to everyone, as I'm sure he and the team in 2020 went through something similar when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers demolished them.

Thursday was all about a reality check, on a night with a ton of distraction.
