The Green Bay Packers officially ruled out wide receiver Christian Watson on Friday and listed fellow wideout Romeo Doubs as questionable.
Rookie receiver Dontayvion Wicks, is good-to-go and doesn't have an injury designation heading into the Packers' Week 1 matchup against the Chicago Bears.
What do all three of these guys have in common outside of being wide receivers on the Packers? Well, all three have been dealing with -and two are still dealing with- hamstring injuries.
It's a curious trend that has Packers head coach Matt LaFleur ready to start finding answers/a solution to the problem.
"I think anytime you have injuries, specifically soft-tissue, that's something that always sparks a conversation and [something] you have to do a little digging on," LaFleur told reporters on Friday. "So, that's something we'll look at."
"No, that'll be more towards when we start to put our schedule and plan in place for next offseason," he later added when asked if he had already started the investigative process.
While yes, the hamstring injuries are troubling, there's one likely factor that is involved with all three players: youth.
A lot of times, soft-tissue injuries are a result of faulty preparation on the players' part. All three of these guys have very, very limited experience with NFL routines and keeping their bodies in proper shape off-the-field and there aren't any veteran wideouts on the roster that can help them maintain when they're not in the facility.
Now, no one is calling them lazy or anything that like that. So let's not even go down that path. It's a simple matter of not being very experienced. We all know how players have to be in the best shape of their lives in order just to play this game, much less sustain over extended periods of time.
Like LaFleur stated, the situation certainly warrants a conversation. But, the cause is likely an innocuous inconvenience that can be corrected over time.
