The Green Bay Packers' first preseason game was a fun one and even though these games don't count, it was nice to see the team put together a solid performance, overall, in their 36-19 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
There were plenty of big plays throughout the night and plenty of guys who made a good case for a job on the final roster. In all, there's a lot to talk about, so let's go ahead and dive in and discuss the players that really stood out.
RB Emanuel Wilson
With Lew Nichols nursing a shoulder injury, Wilson saw a chunk of playing time and man, did he make the most of it.
The undrafted rookie ripped off 111 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just six carries. His 80-yard touchdown run was easily the highlight of the night and it showed that Wilson's game is more than just power. And the fact that he did it on the 14-year anniversary of his father's death makes the performance even better.
In all, he played 15 snaps, which was second-most among Packers running backs. The key, however, is Wilson didn't play an special teams. The Packers have been more than clear that whomever wins the RB3 job has to play special teams and they have to pass block. Patrick Taylor led all running backs with 10 special teams snaps.
Let's see if Wilson gets some special teams snaps against the New England Patriots, because if he does, it could go a long way in determining who wins the RB3 job.
CB Carrington Valentine
Valentine continued his recent tear against the Bengals. The Packers' seventh-round rookie made play after play and ended up with one interception, three pass break-ups, and four solo tackles on 29 snaps.
Oh, and all three of the aforementioned stats either tied for the lead or led the entire defense, as well.
The key with Valentine's recent play is he is showing tremendous ball skills after a collegiate career that featured just one total interception on the stat sheet. On top of that, Valentine made a very nice open-field tackle early in the game, which is nice to see considering the defense's recent tackling issues.
He also recorded nine special teams snaps, which is critical. Unless something goes terribly wrong, this kid is a lock to make the Packers' final roster and it's going to be fun to see how he impacts the 2023 season.
WR Samori Toure
Rookie wideout Jayden Reed is the favorite to win the WR3/slot job, but Toure is not going to back down without a challenge and that was made more than clear against the Bengals.
Toure finished the night with three receptions for 56-yards. Those numbers included two receptions of 25+ yards and one of the big gains came on a 3rd and 9, which was great to see. He also had a really nice 44-yard kick return that showcased a different ability.
Toure has had a quietly good camp and he's definitely in the mix for a much bigger role in 2023. And who knows – if he keeps up the play he showed Friday night then he could very well hold onto the slot job. Or, at least make it a timeshare with Reed.
There were several other names such as Sean Clifford, who had a solid night despite throwing two interceptions. However, his hold on the QB2 job is pretty much good to go, so he can only "rise" so much. Still, he showed the "gamer" qualities that LaFleur recently pointed out.
Dontayvion Wicks, Karl Brooks, and even Zach Tom are some other names that had really good nights, as well.
In all, Friday was fun for a preseason game and we'll get more pieces to the puzzle after the Packers face off against the New England Patriots in Week 2.
