The New Orleans Saints kicked off 2023 with a 26-24 preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. There were plenty of positives and negatives on both sides of the ball for Dennis Allen and company.
What were the three best takeaways from game one, though?
Where you A.T.?
Saints rookie wide receiver A.T. Perry dazzled in his first NFL action. He led the team in receptions (6) and receiving yards (70). He also hauled in a great throw from Jameis Winston for the team's second touchdown of the game.
Perry looked smooth and confident in his first professional game. The Saints are excited about the upside of the former Wake Forest WR. He's competing for a roster spot, and today was a step in the right direction for Perry.
Fancy New Carr
Derek Carr looked masterful in his sole drive for the Saints to open the game. He completed six of eight passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. He was finding soft spots in coverage consistently and moving the ball around the field. Carr found four different receivers in his limited action.
It was the best possible scenario for the Saints new starter and his offense. It will surely build confidence as the season approaches. New Orleans simply needs consistency from the QB position going forward. Carr has plenty of talent around him.
The Summer of Summers
Linebacker Ty Summers stood out for the Saints today. At a position that needs depth to step up, he did exactly that against the Chiefs. Playing with backups around him, he outshined basically everyone on the field.
Summers helped build his case to stick around on the roster and even grab more playing time on defense behind Demario Davis and Pete Werner. The former Green Bay Packer was noticeable on special teams as well. That's how you earn a spot on the team when it comes to depth. Nephi Sewell made some good plays at linebacker as well.
