Trey Lance got back on the field for the first time since the ankle injury he suffered in Week 2 of last season on Sunday. He marked that return with a touchdown against the Raiders in the 49ers' preseason opener, but that score definitely didn't come how the Niners drew it up.
After struggling markedly and being sacked three times on his first three drives, Lance improved significantly on his fourth, going four of four for 35 yards and a touchdown.
But that touchdown came in extremely fortunate circumstances. Lance was late on a throw over the middle to Chris Conley in the back of the endzone after a play-fake, and defensive back Duke Shelley should have picked it off, but the ball clanked off his hands and into the arms of tight end Ross Dwelley.
Lance was fortunate not to throw at least one interception as the Raiders looked to pounce on balls over the middle of the field, but he did show his playmaking talent and his ability to deliver the ball accurately downfield as the first half progressed.
His day ended with Lance 10 for 15 for 112 yards and a touchdown for a passer rating of 111.
But, as is often the case, the numbers definitely do not tell the full story.
What to watch for in the 49ers’ preseason opener
There’s more than just a quarterback battle to intrigue.
