There is a lot of competition and depth in the Dallas Cowboys secondary. From cornerback to safety, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn has some exciting talent to work with as the Cowboys look to make a run in the NFL playoffs.
At safety, the Cowboys are led by the likes of Donovan Wilson, Malik Hooker and Jayron Kearse. But there's another name that is taking full advantage of the preseason and is trending in the right direction as a result.
Cowboys defensive back Juanyeh Thomas has been turning heads because of his play in training camp. The Georgia Tech product has broken up passes and showed off playmaking ability on the back end of the defense during practices.
Then, he carried that momentum over to the playing field in the preseason opener. Thomas wasted little time in making his presence felt. He intercepted Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence on the first pass of the game.
That obviously created even more buzz for the safety vying to make the 53-man roster. In fact, Jon Machota of The Athletic wrote that Thomas is in the mix to do just that.
Juanyeh Thomas. The rookie safety has been a camp standout. He started things off Saturday by intercepting Jaguars Pro Bowl QB Trevor Lawrence on the second play of the game, a deep ball intended for TE Evan Engram. Thomas also had a game-high two passes defended. Safety will be a tough spot to crack on the 53-man roster, but Thomas is certainly in the mix.
Roster spots on the Dallas Cowboys will be tough to come by when cuts have to be made. However, Juanyeh Thomas is doing his best job to force Dallas to keep his talent on the squad.
