The Dallas Cowboys suffered a major scare in training camp's opening practice on Wednesday. In the very first workout of the team in Oxnard, California, starting safety Donovan Wilson had to be carted off the field.

Later in the day, the Cowboys learned Wilson had suffered a calf strain, suggesting the team had avoided a worst-case scenario.

Now, thanks to ESPN's Todd Archer, we have a much clearer idea of how long Wilson will be off. According to the insider, Wilson could miss 4-6 weeks with a right calf strain suffered in Wednesday’s practice.

Wilson is expected to be ready to go for the Cowboys' kickoff game against the New York Giants. For now, with his being a soft tissue injury, one could expect the team to take it easy with him. It would be far from a surprise if he's shut off for the rest of the offseason.

Wilson was second on the team in defensive snaps last year and has risen through the ranks as one of the most important players in Dan Quinn's defense. His unique versatility allows him to play a deep zone as smoothly as he can be shot out of a cannon as a blitzer or run defender.

The Cowboys defensive coordinator's scheme uses a three-safety formation that's been made possible in part thanks to Wilson's position flex. The team knows how important he is to the success of the unit, signing him to a three-year deal earlier in the year.
