FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots have been reportedly looking to add a veteran running back to the roster, having brought in some for workouts and also looking at one of the top free agents still on the market.
And it looks like they might bring in Dalvin Cook to visit with New England at some point soon.
Dalvin Cook is reportedly visiting with the New York Jets over the weekend, while also remaining in communication with the Patriots about a possible visit.
However, when asked about the reported interest, Patriots coach Bill Belichick gave his typical answer, declining to answer.
“Yeah, I’m not going to talk about players that aren’t on our team. That’s a long standing policy that I’m going to continue to stick with,” Belichick said.
However, while Belichick didn't comment, Patriots Director of Player Personnel Matt Groh confirmed New England's interest in Cook following the first day of training camp on Wednesday.
“We explore as many options as we can. Dalvin’s another player,” Groh said. “This is a really, really unique situation with both these players. You don’t typically have players of this caliber available at this time.”
“So this is a unique situation and in any unique situation, I think everybody evaluates and looks at, with Dalvin,” Groh added. “We saw firsthand last year going up to Minnesota on Thanksgiving… Saw Dalvin firsthand and what he can do.”
Cook was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round (41st overall pick) in the 2017 NFL Draft. Across six years with the Vikings, Cook appeared in 73 games with 1,282 carries for 5,993 yards and 47 touchdowns. On the receiving side, he had 221 receptions for 1,794 yards and five touchdowns.
The four-time Pro Bowler's experience and skill would add depth to the Patriots offense, so all eyes will be on New England to see if they will be able to land this top running back.
