FOXBORO, Mass. — Having held out from mandatory minicamp due to reports that he was unhappy with his contract, many eyes were on New England Patriots defensive lineman Lawrence Guy to see if he would be there for training camp.
Yet, despite his rumored unhappiness, Guy was there for the first day of training camp on Wednesday and spoke with reporters on Thursday.
Guy has two years remaining on his contract, but has no guaranteed money remaining. However, he didn't comment much when asked about this.
“Me and my agent have been in discussions with the organization and we’re going to keep that private between us,” Guy said. “I’m here. Big smile on my face. I’m going to do whatever I can for the organization and work as hard as I can. That’s why we play this game. We play this game to be on the field, to be a brotherhood.”
And when asked about if there were any changes between minicamp and training camp, Guy's answer was simple: "“I’m going to keep that private."
Guy is entering his 13th season in the NFL, having had stints with the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, and Baltimore Ravens before joining the Patriots in 2017.
“I’m just enjoying the game right now. Year 13. Everyday is a blessing when I get to touch this field,” Guy said.
Part of Guy's absense from minicamp was due to his daughter being born around that time, with him saying that "family is the biggest thing for me."
Guy has won a Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2018 along with being named to New England's All 2010s team. And despite having had a long career in the league, he isn't ready to stop just yet.
“Retirement’s in everybody’s mind nowadays,” Guy said. “People are retiring after two, three years. But no, I’m still enjoying the game. When I’m done enjoying this game and I feel like I need to hang them up, then I’m gonna hang them up.
