Cincinnati Bengals punter Drue Chrisman was revealed to be hospitalized this week prior to the team's first training camp practice on Wednesday. Head coach Zac Taylor didn't specify Chrisman's condition, but said it was treated quickly.
Two days later, Chrisman himself posted a selfie from his hospital bed, giving fans a thumbs up and thanking them for the support. He says he'll hopefully be back at practice soon.
A Cincinnati native and Ohio State alum, Chrisman was set to compete with rookie Brad Robbins for the Bengals' punting job. He took over for long-time veteran Kevin Huber in the middle of last season. He averaged 47.4 yards per punt, but his average hang time was a meager 3.85. Only two others had an average under 4.00.
This offseason, Chrisman has been spending time delivering for DoorDash and giving food away to homeless people around Cincinnati.
Missing any practice time at all will put Chrisman even further behind the eight ball than he already was, but at least it appears he'll be back on the field in the near future. His most important opportunities will come in preseason games. Special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons will want to have both his punters take reps in games that will surely have plenty of punts.
We likely won't get any information on what Chrisman was treated for until he's back with the team.
