The Dallas Cowboys are dealing with a situation at the moment that involves right guard Zack Martin holding out.
Martin is an eight-time All-Pro and is making around $7 million less than the top-paid players at his position. So his want to get compensated accordingly makes sense.
One thing about Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is that he will always have something to say, and sometimes it's a headscratcher. That's what took place on Saturday when Jones spoke on making changes to Martin's deal.
“It’s not about precedent, it’s about facts," Jones said. "We need the money to pay (Micah) Parsons. We need the money to pay the players that we got to pay in the future. That’s a fact.”
Parsons will certainly need to be paid for the amazing talent he is. However, Jones isn't being all the way truthful.
The Cowboys have a fifth-year option when it comes to Parsons since he's a first-round pick. That means that Dallas can lock him up through the 2025 season if need be before signing Parsons long-term, so Jones shouldn't make it seem like it's a necessity at the moment especially since he can't even begin negotiating a possible extension until after the 2023 season.
Then there's the fact that once Parsons is signed long-term, that will give the Cowboys more flexibility when that happens. The bottom line here is that Parsons and what his cap hit will be won't be a problem for the Cowboys for quite some time.
Jones continued to speak on Martin, and his stance got even stronger on the topic when asked what needs to happen to resolve it.
“Nothing. He’ll come to camp when he comes to camp," said Jones. "There’s no resolution. There are a lot of consequences if he doesn’t. … He’s been at the top of the money all the way through, drafted high and got a lot of money, got a lot of money over the years. It’s just hard to get it all. The bottom line is, nothing needs to happen.”
Martin told his teammates he'll be at camp soon, so we'll how long that takes.
