Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor made sure that the end of July will have plenty of drama by reportedly requesting a trade.
The report that Taylor requested a trade comes just days after Colts owner Jim Irsay revealed that no contract extension talks have taken place with the star running back.
Taylor, a former Wisconsin standout, played in just 11 games last season while dealing with an injured ankle. In 2021, Taylor reached the Pro Bowl after rushing for 1,811 yards and 18 touchdowns. The 24-year-old running back also caught 40 passes for 360 yards and two touchdowns.
It's certainly possible that Taylor doesn't get traded considering it's unlikely that other franchises will be willing to give up much for a running back. But the Colts, thanks to Irsay, can be a bit of a wild card at times. So it would seem that every option is on the table in regards to a trade.
4 NFL teams that could trade for Colts RB Jonathan Taylor
New York Jets: The Jets have been courting free agent running back Dalvin Cook this week. And signing Cook seems more likely than giving up assets for Taylor. Cook, however, is 3.5 years older than Taylor. If the Jets view Taylor as a long-term option (though that might be a stretch considering the current view of running backs in the NFL), then perhaps they could decide to pursue a deal with Indy. Landing Taylor shouldn't cost too much in compensation due to the current state of the running back position in the NFL.
Miami Dolphins: If the Jets, one of the Dolphins' AFC East division rivals, end up signing Cook, then it would almost behoove Miami to make a deal with the Colts to level the playing field a bit. The AFC East is going to be a tough division this season with three teams essentially "going for it" (and the other team is the New England Patriots, a team that's always tough with Bill Belichick leading the charge). Miami can't afford to give up much ground in the talent department in the AFC East.
Chicago Bears: The Bears have given quarterback Justin Fields some weapons this offseason — most notably wide receiver DJ Moore — but the dynamic young quarterback could still use some more playmakers around him. Chicago currently has Khalil Herbert and D'Onta Foreman as their top two running backs. Herbert has been good, but Taylor would be an upgrade (and it could make the Bears a surprise contender in the NFC North).
Buffalo Bills: The Bills have been involved in the Cook sweepstakes to some extent. But it doesn't appear that Cook will be playing in Buffalo this fall. If the Bills still want to add a running back to their roster to bolster the weapons around Josh Allen, then Taylor could be a great option. The Bills don't have a lot of cap space, so they'd have to get creative with some restructures (NFL teams seemingly always find a way to make it work somehow). While it might be a headache for the front office, it's still very much a possibility for Buffalo.
