The Buffalo Bills general manager, Brandon Beane, just pulled off yet another massive win for the organization. It wasn't with a splash signing, in fact, it was the opposite. Beane pulled off highway robbery months after making any sort of move.
We're talking about Beane bringing in Damien Harris and Latavius Murray and how it stacks up with the New England Patriots' most recent decision to pick up Ezekiel Elliott.
To put everything into perspective, the Patriots just made the decision to sign Elliott to a contract that's maximum value is $6M. The Patriots got their running back but paid a king's ransom, especially when looking at the Bills' roster.
Now, you're probably thinking, "Well Adam, they signed Eliott who is going to be the number one RB for the Patriots, don't be dumb (blows raspberries)."
Elliott is also going to be splitting carries in some capacity with dominant RB Rhamondre Stevenson. Meaning, Elliot isn't really their true number one who will be wearing the weight of the entire offense on his back.
Instead, Elliott's role will most likely be a higher usage for guys like Harris or Murray. Now, this is where Beane's 3D chess really shines. I've written before about Beane's genius, recently back in July after he passed on DeAndre Hopkins.
Let's take a look at the numbers. Cover One's Hans Hansen broke down the yards per attempt and maximum pay. Needless to say, Beane has struck gold yet again.
Both Murray and Harris had a higher yards per attempt than Elliott last season, so their pay should be relatively close, right?
Not at all. The maximum pay that Murray can get this season is $1.318M while Harris is sitting at $1.770M, Elliott has the opportunity to bring in a staggering $6M to play a slightly larger role in the offense, on paper.
Beane, once again, is showing up the Patriots franchise without even making a single move. While Elliott has a chance to shine and I think he's going to be a difference-maker for the Patriots, it's just yet another way where Beane has excelled at a GM.
Mind you, Buffalo is a top team so getting those guys cheap comes with the territory, something Patriots fans know all too well after aging veterans would take a massive discount to join Brady.
Division rivalries are fun, they weren't for about 2 decades of the Patriots running roughshod on the Buffalo Bills. It just feels good to be on the other end and poke fun at what seems like a ridiculous move weeks before any meaningful football takes place.
I don't need to be reminded about the Bills never winning a Super Bowl and how many the Patriots have won, I am well aware. Beane won this trade without so much as lifting a figure and I think it's glorious.
Let's see what other great moves Bill Belichick can overpay to band-aid fix the offense.
