The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Kendrick Green in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
A day-two pick that was thrust into a starting role at center, Green struggled as a rookie and was inactive for most of last year as a healthy scratch.
He understands what that means for his time in Pittsburgh, and he was brutally honest about it:
Green: "I kind of been trending down"
"Do you feel like this is an important camp for you?" Asked a reporter
"I think every camp is important, obviously, but this one's a little different," answered Green. "Considering the position I've been in the last few years… I've kind of been trending down, I guess you could say with the way I was playing. So I'm just trying to figure out a way to bounce back."
"Do you think you're starting to trend up now? Playing fullback and stuff?" Asked the reporter
"Uhh, I would say I'm steady right now," answered Green.
And while at the time of his answer, he was certainly playing steady, that changed on Friday night when Green struggled mightily at backup center, whiffing on multiple blocks in the run game and allowing interior push from defensive lineman.
That is backed up by a horrid 39.5 PFF grade, and a film review that leaves you shaking your head.
But it's not all doom and gloom for Green. He has embraced his role in special packages as a fullback, and even more importantly, has two more games to prove he is still worthy of a roster spot.
So hopefully green climbs himself out of this ditch, starting today when the Steelers kick off their final week of practice in Latrobe. It's crunch time for Green and many other players on the bubble to show their worth.
