The Denver Broncos have made a move at the kicker position.
Put bluntly, Brett Maher and Elliott Fry were bad in the first preseason game. Outside of the offensive line woes, arguably the biggest weakness of that game was their inability to kick the ball through the uprights. Listen, I could never do it, but it was really bad. Elliott was admittedly better than Maher, but his injury forced the organization's hand.
Mike Klis from 9News reported that the team has waived injured K Elliott Fry, meaning that Maher is the only one on the roster currently giving him the starting K position. Klis discussed his injury and some reasoning behind the move.
But Fry tweaked a lower body muscle. Fry should be fine with a lower body muscle that is considered day-to-day but the Broncos needed a roster spot to accomodate the signing Tuesday of rookie long-snapper Jack Landherr.
Oh how nice it would be to have a consistent, franchise-leading Super Bowl kicker on the roster. Like, I don't know, Brandon McManus. The head-scratching decision to drop him for Maher or Fry immediately divided the fanbase.
With one preseason game under our belts, and the subpar play from both kickers, Maher needs to step it up big time or else he may find himself on the outside looking in as well. While he is currently the only kicker on the roster, don't be surprised if that changes quickly.
For now, we have our starting kicker. Despite his first preseason game and what transpired in the playoffs last year, Maher is looking to bounce back and remind the team and the league why he is one of the very best across the NFL.
Sean Payton should start picking up the phone to check in on some free agents. Payton has proven time and time again that your position is earned, not gifted. It'll be an interesting few weeks before the season officially begins.
Broncos sign WR J.J. Koski
The Denver Broncos are wasting no time adding important depth to the roster. Getting Wilson more weapons is sure to put a smile on his face.
