The Dallas Cowboys visit the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday night for Week 2 of the NFL preseason.
As always, the game is about player evaluation more than it is about the scoreboard. In fact, no one really cares what the score is other than perhaps a handful of fans. But it's simply not what players and coaches are thinking about.
So with that in mind, let's look at four players who must bounce back following shaky performances last weekend.
DT Isaac Alarcón
Alarcón might not be on everyone's radar but he's got one of the most intriguing storylines of the year on the Cowboys. The Mexican-born player is entering his fourth year in the organization but his first as a defensive lineman. After three years of playing offensive line in Dallas (and many years before that in Mexico's top college football program), Isaac is playing a position he never had before. A true underdog trying to shock the world.
During the preseason opener, he showed off his play strength but it became clear his technique is that of a player learning a new position. He struggled to play long and beat his opponents in the hands game that's played every down in the trenches.
That isn't a knock on him, of course. After all, it's a tall task to ask him to look like a finished product. The Cowboys are betting on his upside as an athletic freak. As he fights for a spot on the roster or the practice squad, Alarcón must show a quick jump in his use of hands and awareness vs. certain situations like double teams.
RB Malik Davis
Davis' stock is down following the preseason opener as he picked up three yards in four rush attempts and missed a key blitz pickup. However, it's hard to count him out just yet.
But with Deuce Vaughn busting on the scene like the Kool-Aid man, Davis knows he needs a strong showing on Saturday night as he competes with the rookie and Rico Dowdle for a place on the team.
OL Josh Ball
Yes, I'm listing Ball but really this could be any other backup offensive lineman. Things didn't look pretty for the Cowboys as they faced the Jaguars first-team defensive line last weekend but it didn't really get better as the game went on.
Many perceived Ball as a cut candidate but with others like Matt Farniok struggling, a strong performance could be enough to guarantee himself a place on the 53-man roster. Ball allowed three pressures versus the Jaguars and Farniok allowed four, per PFF. The same goes for rookies like Earl Bostick and T.J. Bass. They should be considered longshots but their competition is certainly beatable.
WR KaVontae Turpin
Special teams coordinator John Fassel had big praise for Turpin earlier this week, essentially confirming him as the Cowboys' ace returner. But Turpin did fumble in the opener and didn't do much as a wide receiver other than making one 15-yard catch in two targets.
He's obviously projected to make the cut but he could use a strong game.
