The Patriots starting offense had their first statement day of the new offensive regime yesterday by demolishing the Packer's defense.
The highlights of day two were the deep passes. The first one came early in the day when Mac Jones hit wide receiver Tyquan Thornton downfield, resulting in approximately a 50-yard gain. Thornton beat cornerback Jaire Alexander in coverage, making it even more exciting, as Alexander is widely regarded as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
Thornton has been heating up over the last several practices, so the continuation of the chemistry-building between Jones and Thornton is a great sign for things to come. Unfortunately, if there is anything that could hinder the development of this connection, it's Thornton's inability to stay on the field. Following that deep catch, Thornton suffered some type of injury and never returned to practice. It is speculated to be a shoulder injury, according to CLNS Media's Taylor Kyles.
Another deep pass highlight, this time to DeVante Parker, with Jaire Alexander in coverage again. Jones connected with Parker on a 50-yard touchdown to conclude the two-minute drill, prompting the team to storm the field in celebration.
Individually, Mac Jones was terrific, finishing the day 14/17 in a practice performance that many people are calling his best ever. The pass blocking showed improvement as well, though we're still awaiting the presence of the entire starting unit on the field. Another positive sign was guard Mike Onwenu participating in some light conditioning work, suggesting that his return may be approaching. Hopefully, the Patriots can maintain their upward trajectory throughout the week and into their second preseason game this Saturday.
