The Denver Broncos head coach, Sean Payton, is sending a message to the locker room without saying a single word: Earn your spot.
We're weeks removed from when Payton and the front office made the surprising move to release franchise legend Brandon McManus, the last remaining member of their most recent Super Bowl-winning team and the second-highest scorer in franchise history.
Now, on a one-year deal, Payton made a splash by bringing in another kicker who should push Fry for the starting position. Aaron Wilson reported that the Broncos have agreed to terms with veteran kicker and former New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys Brett Maher.
Maher shined last season with the Cowboys until his extra-point issues in the postseason. Previously, as Mike Klis from 9News reported, Maher was brought in for a minicamp tryout in mid-June.
Maher and Payton have a history with one another as Maher kicked for Payton with the Saints in 2021. The four-year kicker has enjoyed a career that's seen him play in 54 games with an 81% career field goal percentage and a 95.5% success rate with extra points, in the regular season.
Payton, since day one, has continued to shake things up, add competition, and do everything he can in order to make this team better. Fry and Maher will both be competing for the starting kicker position as camp is nearly underway.
Buckle up, Broncos fans. Things are about to get a whole lot more interesting.
