It has been an active offseason for the Indianapolis Colts. The franchise has hired a new head coach to run the show, drafted a talented rookie quarterback to hitch its wagon to and was even hit with a big suspension that took the NFL by storm.

Now, the Colts are preparing to open training camp in the coming days and kickoff the Shane Steichen era. All eyes will be on Steichen, rookie Anthony Richardson and a host of other storylines as the season inches closer.

Before training camp officially begins, we are going to highlight some of the biggest topics of the Colts' offseason to this point. That includes hiring Steichen and drafting Richardson, of course.

Colts hire Steichen

The biggest move of the Colts offseason was hiring Shane Steichen. Indianapolis parted ways with Frank Reich during the season and even gave former offensive lineman Jeff Saturday an opportunity to see what he can do on the sidelines.

But when the season ended, Indianapolis shifted its focus to finding a permanent replacement and nailing the hire. Therefore, the franchise keyed in on Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Steichen.

Steichen worked wonders with Jalen Hurts in Philly as the QB enjoyed a breakout campaign last season. Now, Steichen will be tasked with developing the QB of the future in Indy.

Drafting Richardson

Which brings us to Anthony Richardson. The Colts have had a bit of a revolving door since Andrew Luck retired before the 2019 NFL season. Since then, Indianapolis has tried to solve the position with veteran signal callers.

Jacoby Brissett, Phillip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan were some of the names that started behind center over the last few seasons. Even Nick Foles and Sam Ehlinger saw snaps and had opportunities.

Instead of trying that route again, the Colts took a different approach with Steichen now in the building. Indianapolis selected the uber athletic Richardson at No. 4 overall with hopes that he will be a perfect fit in Steichen's scheme.

Rodgers suspension

Arguably the biggest storyline for the Colts this offseason was when news broke that defensive back Isaiah Rodgers violated the NFL gambling policy. It was quickly reported that he was going to miss the full 2023 season.

Rather than waiting it out, the Colts acted swiftly and released Rodgers, despite some questions in the secondary in the short-term and potentially beyond. Fortunately, the Colts did draft Julius Brents and Darius Rush, and both seemed to be ready for big roles.

Trading Gilmore

Sticking with the secondary, the Indianapolis Colts traded away star cornerback Stephon Gilmore early on in the offseason. Gilmore, despite aging, had a strong season with the Colts last season.

But the corner did not really fit with the roster's timeline. So, Indianapolis opted to move the Pro Bowler for a fifth-round draft pick from the Dallas Cowboys. The Colts get to reset the defensive backfield, while the Cowboys pair Gilmore with Trevon Diggs.

Taylor contract

Now, the big topic surrounding the Indianapolis Colts as the team prepares for training camp is Jonathan Taylor and his status. Taylor is hoping to cash-in on a contract extension, but Indianapolis has yet to extend an offer.

Taylor recently led the league in rushing prior to an injury-filled 2022 season. Now healthy, Taylor expects to return to his All-Pro form. Therefore, he's reportedly irritated about where things stand with his contract and future.

It doesn't help that the running back market has been unkind to many of Taylor's peers as of late. Which makes things even more interesting for Taylor and the Colts as the season nears.
