The Bears received some unfortunate news regarding a vital offensive piece on Sunday.
Per ESPN's Field Yates, the Bears have put wide receiver Chase Claypool on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list ahead of training camp.
This is a disappointing development for Claypool and the Bears.
The receiver suffered a soft tissue injury during the first week of OTAs that sidelined him for much of the offseason program. After recently being spotted working out in Florida with teammates, it was thought that Claypool would be ready for camp.
Even with the addition of D.J. Moore and rookie Tyler Scott, the Bears were hoping for a rebound year from Claypool. The team gave up a second-round pick for the receiever at the 2022 trade deadline, and thus far that deal has not paid off.
After coming to Chicago, Claypool collected just 14 catches for 140 yards and no touchdowns. A disappointment considering the draft capital that was surrendered.
It's unfair to blame Claypool for the offensive woes of 2022. Nobody on the offense put up gaudy numbers. In 2023, much pressure should be taken off of Claypool with the new-look weapons surrounding him.
Players on the PUP list still count against the 90-man roster and can be removed from the list and resume practicing any time.
