Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is set to audition for the Detroit Lions.
Bridgewater's NFL career started in Minnesota after the Vikings selected the QB with the 32nd pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Bridgewater had a couple of nice seasons for the Vikes, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2015. Unfortunately, Bridgewater suffered a catastrophic leg injury before the 2016 NFL season that derailed his promising career.
Since 2018, Bridgewater has made starts for the Saints, Panthers, Broncos, and Dolphins. While never again reaching Pro Bowl level, Bridgewater has looked serviceable when thrust into action. Most recently, Bridgewater started two games for the Miami Dolphins in 2022 after Tua Tagovailoa's concussion.
The Lions could certainly use a quality backup behind Jared Goff. Hendon Hooker was drafted in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, but seemingly has a ways to go in his recovery from an ACL injury. Behind Hooker, the Lions currently roster Nate Sudfeld and UDFA Adrian Martinez, neither of which have a single NFL start.
Adding Bridgewater, who has 65 starts in his career, would bring a much-needed steady presence to the QB room in Detroit.
Additionally, if Goff did struggle at any point, the Lions would know they had a capable backup in Bridgewater. For teams with playoff aspirations like the Lions, it never hurts to have a backup plan.
