Matthew Slater is the latest to comment on New England Patriots teammate Jack Jones' legal situation after the cornerback was arrested last month.
Slater was asked about how he is trying to help Jones through this situation, and the Patriots captain truly showed his leadership capabilities.
He first provided a one word answer on how he is doing this: "Listen"
A situation like that comes into play and obviously, I don't want to comment too much on the situation, but everyone's got an opinion. Everyone feels like they know what's the best thing. And I think the best thing to do in a situation like that is to listen," Slater said. “So I think listening to him, listen to the coaches, listen to whoever, trying to learn and educate and equip, and then you try to support people that are in tough situations. I think the easy thing to do would be to turn your back on someone like that and just cast them aside but the hard thing to do would be to support them and love them and try to listen to him.”
Jones was arrested at Boston Logan International Airport for trying to bring two loaded firearms on a plane last month. The second-year cornerback is being charged with two counts of possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport, possession of ammunition without a Firearm Identification Card, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.
However, Belichick confirmed that Jones will be with the team for training camp, but declined to comment further.
Slater joins Matthew Judon, Jonathan Jones, Jalen Mills, and James White who have all voiced their support for their fellow teammate.
Jones is due back in court on on August 18 which is the day prior to the Patriots second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. He is potentially facing more the 30 years in prison if he were convicted and sentenced on each of the charges he faces.
However it is clear that Jones' teammates have his back and are willing to listen and help him through his troubles.
Patriots’ Bill Belichick makes first public comments on Jack Jones following arrest in June
Veterans reported to the facility for training camp on Tuesday, with many wondering if Jones would be in attendance.
