Boston sports fans have been expecting news about the future for Boston Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron and on Tuesday the long-awaited question was answer.

Yet, it was not the answer people had hoped for.

After 19 seasons in the NHL, all with the Bruins, Bergeron announced his retirement. And the three Patriots captains were just a few of the many to voice their appreciation for what he brought to the city.

“I think he should be celebrated as an icon for the city of Boston and Boston sports," Slater said. "So I think it’s a bit of a sad day for Boston sports fans, but we should certainly celebrate everything he’s done. I wish him the best. Congratulations on a tremendous career,

"I mean, I think for me it’s consistency is the thing that stood out to me about him. I probably was about five or six years into my career before I really started looking at what those guys been doing. And obviously he was the guy that just gave that organization and gave our city so much consistency. And I think that’s something to celebrate," Slater added. "And the other thing I appreciate is just the loyalty. With the way pro sports go nowadays, it’s not uncommon for guys to move, go other places, but for him to do it here for as long as he did, I think is tremendous. ” Slater said. “One of the last old guys in this town so I certainly appreciate what he did.”

The news broke just minutes before Slater and the rest of the team went out to run, with David Andrews admitting that "it's crazy."

"What an amazing career he's had and how fortunate to play for such a great organization. A lot of respect for the way he's carried himself," Andrews said. "I know he's a great player. Just the way he's carried himself in communities and led the team, I think it's been really impressive."

Bergeron finished his career with one Stanley Cup championship along with being a six-time Selke Award winner and nine-time All-star.
