Boom! The Dallas Cowboys are starting training camp with big-time news regarding cornerback Trevon Diggs, who was set to enter the 2023 NFL season on a contract year.

That is changing on the first day of camp as Diggs and the Cowboys are reportedly finalizing a 5-year extension worth $97 million. The deal includes a $21.25 million signing bonus.. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero broke the news moments after the team's opening press conference.

Diggs will average $19.4 million per year, which will rank fifth in the league, tied with New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore. On top of the total $97 million, Diggs can earn another $7 million through incentives over the length of the deal.

It's been a long time coming for Diggs as he broke out as a sophomore with an All-Pro caliber season where he finished with 11 interceptions in 2021. Although those numbers came down to Earth last year, Diggs actually improved in coverage and became much less than just a "boom-or-bust" cornerback in 2022.

He also drastically improved as a tackler, showing better run defense and making plays in the open field against receivers trying to earn after-the-catch yards on him.

The Cowboys have said all offseason they were trying to get a headstart on some of their top young players and Diggs is a good player to start with. Now the team's focus shifts to CeeDee Lamb, Dak Prescott, and maybe even Zack Martin, who's trying to get a pay bump by holding out from camp.
