A good running game is a quarterback's best friend. Well, the New Orleans Saints signed Jamaal Williams back in March hoping that his gritty and tough style would complement Alvin Kamara and make life a little easier for Derek Carr.
Kamara could end up missing some time due to his legal case, meaning Williams may be put in a situation where he has to carry the running load in New Orleans for a while.
Based on what Williams' peers think, the Saints will be just fine if that's the case as he landed at No.95 on the NFL's Top 100 list for 2023.
Williams said, “Let the big dogs eat,” in his viral Hard Knocks speech last year. He did exactly that in his second season with the Lions. The veteran RB led the league with 17 rushing touchdowns and led the team with 1,066 rushing yards in 2022. Williams was rewarded for his career year with a three-year contract with the Saints this past offseason. –Christian Gonzales, NFL.com
Williams isn't a stranger to sharing a backfield.
He and Aaron Jones were running mates for four years as members of the Green Bay Packers. Williams, although he had the lighter load, managed to tally nearly 2,000 yards during his time with the Packers.
Williams was with the Detroit Lions for two seasons, sharing time with D'Andre Swift who now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles. The two had pretty much identical seasons in every category in 2021. However, ankle and shoulder injuries gave Williams more playing time last season, and the rest is history.
In the case of Williams, he just needs opportunities to have the ball in his hands, and once that happens, the production follows, the film doesn't lie.
Saints new RB Jamaal Williams has special motivation to score touchdowns this season
The reasoning is hilarious.
