It's common knowledge that anything that happens around the Dallas Cowboys gets a lot of attacking. But what happened on Wednesday can be categorized as overkill.
On a play where quarterback Dak Prescott had to scramble due to none of his targets getting open, All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs shouted out 'Shut your b–h a– up' once minimal yardage was gained. Of course, the football world, especially the media, took that as an opportunity to question the credibility of Prescott as a leader.
Diggs had time to address the situation on Thursday and quickly put to bed any assumptions that words towards Prescott were anything more than simple football trash talk.
“I feel like it makes practice fun. At the end of the day, that’s my brother. I love Dak to death. There nothing behind it," Diggs said. "It’s just competitiveness, it’s just football.”
Football is an alpha male sport. So when you get a large group of them together, especially in the hot summer sun, words can be exchanged that get somewhat heated, but all in the spirit of competition of course.
Prescott got to put in his two cents about the incident as well if you want to call it that.
“It’s honestly one of those things you realize a lot of people haven’t been in heated competitions. …I feel bad for people who haven’t been in those moments. … I start a lot of it," Prescott said.
The former fourth-round pick hit the nail right on the head there.
Dallas' offense has averaged 29.3 points per game over the last two seasons, tops in the NFL. Also, their defense has led the league in forced turnovers in each of the last two years (67).
The Cowboys have Pro Bowlers and All-Pros throughout their roster on both sides of the ball. With that type of pride on the line every snap in practice, there's bound to be a time when the competitive juices overflow a little bit, nobody wants to be put on a highlight reel.
Prescott has been an easy target for ridicule due to his interception woes in 2022. However, if anyone thinks what Diggs said was a sign that he's not respected, they simply need to stop talking.
“Stay out of our business," said Diggs. "People don’t need to worry about what we got going on, our relationship, my relationship with my brother. Dak is the leader of our team. He’s going to go out there and have a great year. I have the utmost respect for Dak.”
Diggs and Prescott are fine, it never was what others made it out to be.
