Earlier this week, former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, a third round selection by the New York Giants in the 2023 NFL Draft, told reporters that one of his goals in 2023 is to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.

"I always set high goals for myself," said Hyatt. "I want to be offensive rookie of the year. I think that's the biggest thing I want to do. And we're gonna get there, you know. It's going to be day by day. We're gonna stack days and even if it's a good day or a bad day, we're gonna learn from it and get better."

On Friday, Giants head coach Brian Daboll, who comes from the Nick Saban/Bill Belichick coaching tree, was asked for his reaction to Hyatt's lofty rookie goal.

"I know he said that yesterday, that's something that's obviously important to him," said Daboll. "But I'm not really focused on any of those type of things. It's just really getting better each day and learning the playbook. He's got a long way to go — just like all the rookies do."

That comment from Daboll led to this exchange with a reporter.

Reporter: Do you think that puts pressure on him (Hyatt)?

Daboll: You'd have to ask him.

Reporter: I asked your opinion.

Daboll: I already told you what I thought. I'm focused on today getting better.

It's pretty clear that Daboll doesn't care about personal awards or goals at this point of the preseason. While I'm sure he'd be thrilled to see Hyatt win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award — it would instantly justify trading up to select Hyatt — it's the furthest thing from his mind during training camp.

But it's still a good thing for Hyatt to have that goal. Nearly every wide receiver in the NFL has personal goals that they set. And if they reach those goals, it's ultimately a good thing for the team.

If Hyatt wins the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award, it will almost certainly mean that New York's offense operated at a high level in 2023.
