The Dallas Cowboys made multiple notable moves this offseason in hopes of getting over the hump and reaching the next level in the NFL Playoffs. Trading for wide receiver Brandin Cooks and cornerback Stephon Gilmore highlight that.

But the Cowboys didn't just stop there. Instead, Dallas also used the draft to bolster one key area of need that has plagued the team over recent years. The Cowboys drafted defensive tackle Mazi Smith in the first-round to improve the run defense.

Smith is a massive defensive line prospect that emerged as one of the top interior linemen in all of college football at Michigan. While he does not play the sexiest brand of football, Smith fills a crucial need on the Cowboys.

Because Dallas has struggled to stop the run in big games, allowing opponents to prolong drives and wear out the defense. By investing a premium selection at defensive tackle, the Cowboys have shown that they are serious about improving that area.

So far, the early returns are very positive in that department. Smith is already looking like he can play significant snaps right out of the gate for defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. His strength has been evident in practices.

But it's not just Smith that is generating hype in that regard. Fellow defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa is also making an impression in camp. Cowboys reporter Kyle Youmans noted that the third-year defender is a "menace in the middle."

When you consider how create Quinn is with his personnel, there is no limit to how good this defense can be if the run defense question marks are answered. Which makes the addition of Smith and the development of Odighizuwa so crucial.

To this point in training camp, the hype looks to be justified. Mazi Smith looks ready for his first taste of NFL football, while Odighizuwa appears to be primed for a strong season inside.
