When Kenny McIntosh went down with a knee injury in last Friday's mock game, the Seahawks feared the worst.

Thankfully, those worst fears have not been realized. Head coach Pete Carroll revealed on Sunday that the seventh-round pick had suffered a knee sprain that will keep him out a couple of weeks.

While not ideal for a first-year player looking to quickly adapt to the speed of the NFL, the timeline for his return keeps McIntosh in the mix to be ready for the regular-season opener.

Said Carroll of McIntosh's injury:

"Very good news. He's got a sprain that might be a couple of weeks. It looked nasty, but the flexible, extraordinary athlete that he is, he made it through that awkward position that he got in, and came out OK. He's walking around and all that, he's got a little swelling. We think it's like a first-degree type of sprain, so we were very lucky there."

The Seahawks should feel very relieved that they will likely have McIntosh available by the time the regular season starts. Though they did not take him until the final round, he gives Seattle a versatile back who can make an impact as both a runner and a pass-catcher out of the backfield. In his final season with Georgia, he had 1,334 yards from scrimmage and 12 touchdowns. For his career, he averaged 11.3 yards per reception.

Starting running back Kenneth Walker III is still out with a groin injury, meaning second-round rookie Zach Charbonnet is set to get the bulk of the first-team reps having recovered from a shoulder injury.

The likelihood is that Walker will be back for Week 1, but the Seahawks still need insurance options who can produce dynamic play from the running back spot, and McIntosh provides one.

While McIntosh faces a spell on the sideline, the Seahawks are hopeful they will soon get edge rusher Darrell Taylor back from a shoulder injury in the near future.

"He's doing well," Carroll said. "He's getting better every day, he's feeling stronger and more confident. We don't think it's going to take very long."
