The Vikings' line performed well in 2022, but one weak spot was the right guard position. Ed Ingram struggled mightily at times, giving up a whopping 11 sacks last season.
Per reports, the team is visiting with a veteran who has plenty of starting experience.
Risner was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. The lineman got plenty of starting experience in Denver, with 62 starts over four seasons.
Risner has been extremely consistent in his career, finishing with a PFF grade in the 60s each season. The veteran lineman would seemingly be an instant upgrade over Ingram. Risner was only accountable for three sacks last season.
Ezra Cleveland fared well in the run game in 2022, but he was no star in pass blocking either. The two guards were a big reason why Kirk Cousins was hit more than any other QB a year ago.
The addition of Risner would give the Vikings options. Risner would presumably take Ingram's spot and allow Ingram to fill in at either guard spot or center if needed. The team also rosters Chris Reed, Oli Udoh, and Alan Ali at the guard spots.
Chris Kuper and Justin Rascati are the offensive line coach and assistant offensive line coach respectively in Minnesota, and both coached Risner in Denver. This level of familiarity could help the Vikings land the top remaining guard on the market.
Reaction: Vikings respond to rebuild talks by re-signing star player
The Vikings may not be ready for a complete teardown after all.
