The Detroit Lions have officially released their unofficial depth chart for the preseason this week.

It's pretty common to see these and overreact to what's on them. The thing with the unofficial depth chart is that they rarely point to anything that's earth shaking when it comes to what the teams plans are. So don't worry that your favorite player isn't on them or isn't starting. With that out of the way, here's some three takeaways we came away with.

Brock Wright starting at tight end

This one jumped out to me. This isn't any indictment on Sam LaPorta. He has looked great during camp and just about everyone would agree with that. As for Wright, this seems like the Lions are seeing what Wright really has with the ones during the preseason. This might of course mean we get to see a series or two from the first team on Friday.

Derrick Barnes ahead of Jack Campbell

Barnes has been with the first team a lot at camp. That doesn't meant hat Jack Campbell is a bust or something. We'll see plenty of him and he'll ultimately more than likely take the starting spot from Barnes at some point. This really points to the fact that Barnes has looked pretty good at camp.

The Lions might be looking to test him out against the Giants first team offense on Friday. I think we wind up seeing a lot more of Campbell than Barnes once the game gets going.

Starling Thomas V is pretty high

It's a really good sign for Thomas V that he's where he's at on this depth chart. That looks like a spot a player that would make the 52 man roster would be in. For reference, Jeff Okudah was in that same spot for last years unofficial depth chart.

Thomas still has to go out and show what he can do during the game, but he looks like a player that's destined to make this roster once it's all said and done.

Other notables

Riley Patterson is starting at kicker. That's something. Justin Jackson is in at kick returner. That's good for undrafted rookie Dylan Drummond. Maurice Alexander being in that spot would make it harder for Drummond to make the roster. Drummond is ahead of Alexander on the chart too. Mohamed Ibrahim is buried on the depth chart. While things can change, it looks like I may have been wrong about him. Craig Reynolds is in the four spot if the Lions decide to carry four running backs in like they did last year. We'll see.
