Demario Douglas, Patriots training camp 2023

FOXBORO, Mass. — Demario Douglas is taking advantage of each and every opportunity he is given and refuses to let anything stand in his way.

The New England Patriots drafted the Liberty receiver in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and at first he was viewed as a long shot to make the active roster.

But that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

At 5-foot-8, Demario Douglas is aware that he isn't the tallest or the strongest on the field, but that doesn't stop him from making an impact. And while he can't change his height, he has put an emphasis on his weight.

"I always had the mentality of I need to get better, I need to do something. So, I believe my weight was a problem. I'd say my height, but I can't change that," Douglas said. "I gained as I was going through my years, I kept gaining and gaining. And I say my coaches at Liberty helped me. Showed me how to eat right. Showed me how to eat to gain weight and maintain my speed and things like that."

Douglas told reporters that he currently weighs around 183 pounds.

He credited the Patriots staff with doing "a great job," making sure he is eating right, especially while at Gillette Stadium. And he is more than happy to listen and willing to eat whatever is needed to get him to where he needs to be.

"I like a lot of food, I'm not going to lie. I'm not very picky though, so I'll eat anything. So whatever's in there, I'm gonna eat," Douglas said.

The rookie receiver is using his underdog status as additional motivation.

Douglas has impressed during his short time with the Patriots, being one of the main standouts of training camp. He has showcased insane speed and is defeating defenders left and right, currently sitting at 7-0 in 1-on-1 drills.

"A lot of people say my height. You know, I've always been doubted as being young, especially out of high school," Douglas said. "And then I had coaches like 'oh, you kind of short.'

"So I play with a chip on my shoulder. I always come out, I feel like I'm the same height as everybody when I'm on the field. So I do have a chip on my shoulder, but I feel like I can play with anybody."
