FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots added additional depth to their defense on Tuesday morning.
Bringing back a familiar face to Foxborough, the Patriots signed defensive end Trey Flowers.
And Deatrich Wise, who played with Flowers for two season, is very excited to have him back on the team.
“He’s a dog,” Wise said after Tuesday’s training camp practice. “Trey’s a great guy. You know how Trey is. Anybody who reported on Trey (in) 2016 until when he left, he’s been very productive, a great leader. So, good to have him back in the locker room.”
Wise joined the team in 2017 and overlapped with the defensive end during his last two seasons in New England. And Flowers certainly went out with a bang, with the team winning the Super Bowl in 2019.
So it's no secret why Wise is excited to have the two-time Super Bowl champion back on the roster.
As for another teammate, Hunter Henry doesn't have any experience playing with Flowers in New England, but they did play together in college.
“I was with Trey my first two years,” tight end Hunter Henry said. “He kind of introduced me to SEC football, actually. I was a receiver coming into Arkansas. A little light, probably. I never really got put in a three-point stance ’til college.
Henry entered the league one year earlier that Flowers, but remembers one particular moment where the defensive end showed off his skills.
“So they threw me in on 1-on-1 drills, inside run with Trey Flowers, and he embarrassed me pretty early in my career, which humbled me and taught me a lot."
"It’s always good to see Trey. He’s a great player. Obviously, he was great here. He’s had a great career, so it’s fun to see him,” Henry added.
So it'll be interesting to see if Flowers can live up to these high expectations, despite the fact that he is starting his second tenure on the physically unable to perform list.
