San Francisco's PR department put out the depth chart following Tuesday's training camp practice.
Brock Purdy has long since been well established as QB1, but the uncertainty behind him remains, with the Niners second-string quarterback listed as Lance or Darnold.
A clearer picture of who is ahead in the race to be QB2 will come on Sunday when the 49ers face the Raiders in their preseason opener on Sunday.
Tuesday's practice saw Darnold get 14 reps in the 11-on-11 period to Lance's 11. That is only a minor difference, but if Darnold is first on the field in Las Vegas when the 49ers are on offense in a game that Purdy is expected to sit out, then it will be the clearest indication yet that he is the frontrunner to be the lead backup.
The order in which the quarterbacks appear and their respective performances will command the most attention when the 49ers start their exhibition season.
San Francisco will hope to avoid having to rely on either Lance or Darnold in 2023 but, given the Niners' recent history of quarterback injuries and their status as bonafide Super Bowl contenders, no team in the NFL has as much riding on their backup quarterback competition.
For now, there is precious little light being shed on how that battle is going. That will change when the 49ers return to the field at Allegiant Stadium this weekend.
