The Baltimore Ravens added some veteran depth and experience to their running back room nearly three weeks ago with the signing of Melvin Gordon.

Gordon had an intriguing 2022 season as he was waived by the Denver Broncos last November after having five fumbles in 10 games. A week later, he was signed to the practice squad of the Kansas City Chiefs, and although he didn't log a snap, he won a Super Bowl ring.

In February, Gordon's contract expired, and he spent months looking for a new home. After Tuesday's practice, he talked about what convinced him to pick the Ravens.

“It’s just a great organization and that’s just kind of what I want to be a part of," Gordon said. "I went to Kansas City and I’ve kind of seen what a great organization is [and] what comes with a great organization. So, rings come with good organizations. This style of offense kind of fits what I do. [It] always has since I’ve been at [University of] Wisconsin. You only hear great things about this organization around the league. I just thought it was a great opportunity to come in here and show what I can do.”

The Ravens have an interesting situation at running right now with J.K. Dobbins not in attendance at training camp due to being on the PUP list and his contract situation. Gus Edwards recently returned to the practice field, and rookie Keaton Mitchell is trying to find his role.

Gordon is in a position where he can get more reps in practice because of this, which could lead to a plethora of preseason snaps, and hopefully for him, significant action during the regular season.

Dobbins will certainly have a chip on his shoulder once he returns, and Edwards is looking to overcome his injury woes of the last couple of seasons. However, one person thinks Gordon will be right in the mix once the season starts.

“Well, I think [Melvin Gordon III] is a young man that’s hungry," said running backs coach Willie Taggart. "He’s hungry; he wants to help. And what’s been great is – because he’s a great addition – he's brought some competition to that room."

Gordon had back-to-back 900-yard seasons before his dismal performance in 2022. So, there's some thread let on the tires for him, and it'll be interesting to see if he can find a way to contribute despite the stiff competition in front of him.
