The Detroit Lions were expected to add a receiver in the 2023 NFL Draft after the news on Jameson Williams' suspension came out right before the draft. The Lions did eventually go out and draft that receiver when they took North Carolina's Antione Green in the seventh round of the draft.
It's been pretty quiet on the Green front through OTA's, mini camp and training camp. We just haven't heard much about Green at all and it's been a little concerning for Lions fans who were hoping that Green would be a seventh round steal. On Wednesday we got an update on Green from Lions coach Dan Campbell.
"Yeah, I would say inconsistent." Campbell said. "Man he does some things and they really show and then and then it dips and there again, he's a young player. Does some things really catch your eye and there's some things the opposite way. So just he's inconsistent right now and the more that he lessens the inconsistently, the better off he's going to be and that's part of what camp is for him."
Green seems like a player that's going to take some time to find himself out there. That doesn't mean that he's a bust or anything like that. He's a seventh round draft pick and the odds were always going to be against him.
It doesn't help that the Lions went out and traded for Denzel Mims. Mims is a guy that can play that X receiver role just like Green and he can do it better. He's ready to go. Then there's Dylan Drummond. The undrafted rookie has really showed up for the Lions and his ability on special teams give him a leg up on the competition.
The Lions will more than likely carry six receivers into the season and I think Drummond will probably be that sixth receiver. That's going to leave Green as the odd man out. That doesn't mean he's gone though. Green is a prime candidate to make the Lions practice squad and maybe even see the active roster at some point during the season if injuries happen.
Green will have a shot to get better with the Lions and then go out there and try to make an impact in year two. Especially since the Lions could lose Marvin Jones, Denzel Mims and Kalif Raymond in free agency.
