When the Carolina Panthers called Justin Houston seeking a depth addition at outside linebacker, the decision was easy for the 34-year-old.
Panthers head coach Frank Reich coached Houston for a pair of seasons when both were with the Indianapolis Colts. So joining the Panthers for Houston was more a choice of familiarity than anything else.
"It's simple when coach Frank called, I knew right then," Houston said Tuesday. "I trust him. He's a standup guy. What you see is what you get. He's going to be straight up forward with you. He's a guy you can count on. And the biggest thing was trust. I wanted someone I can trust."
The process of bringing in Houston took a few months, Houston said. It was a series of phone calls and conversations about the role he is expected to play for the Panthers. But what took the longest was getting on the same page regarding the expected contract.
In the end, Houston signed a one-year, $7-million contract on Sunday.
And then Reich explained that the veteran is expected to play more of a rotational role within the defense than a constant pass rusher opposite Brian Burns.
“He’ll be a rotational player,” Reich said. “I have no doubt—knowing him the way I do—that if we wanted to play him 60 plays a game, he’d be up to the task. But that won’t be likely. It’s a long season.”
But the rotational role didn't deter Reich from being excited that a familiar face is in the locker room in a season chalked full of new-found expectations.
“Really excited to have Justin," he said. "That group has been really good at camp. I feel like the development of that group has been outstanding, and now to get to add Justin to the group is a big deal. He’s a physical specimen, he’s an incredibly smart football player, he’s a leader, he’s the ultimate competitor.”
With the weight of winning on the Panthers' back, having a veteran like Houston can only help the team's efforts as it attempts to clinch an NFC South crown for the first time in seven years.
