The Dallas Cowboys have made additions to the roster this offseason. Which includes re-signing players already on the roster and by trading for other talent around the league.
However, they have also seen players sign elsewhere. Most recently, tight end Dalton Schultz will be wearing a different uniform for the first time in his career next season. He will remain the Lone Star State but will be playing for the Houston Texans.
It was an expected move to happen, and the Cowboys aren't hurting at the position. Still, it may have tipped the team's hand in regards to what they are thinking for the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.
That is because more than one mock draft has the Cowboys adding another tight end to the roster. Dalton Kincaid out of Utah has become the popular name for Dallas at this point in the draft process.
Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have both linked Kincaid to the Cowboys this offseason. McShay sees Kincaid providing Dak Prescott and the offense with another weapon to go to in the passing game.
With the top receivers all off the board — I’d love to get another one opposite CeeDee Lamb — Dallas can look to Kincaid as another pass-catcher for quarterback Dak Prescott. We didn’t see Kincaid work out at the combine, but he has enough speed to make plays down the seam and can go up and get 50-50 balls. He is coming off a 70-catch, 890-yard, eight-TD campaign with the Utes and has the versatility to move around the formation.
Dane Brugler of The Athletic has also made a mock draft that sends Kincaid to the Cowboys. This month, he wrote that Kincaid could bring similar elements that Schultz featured.
The last time the Cowboys drafted a tight end in the first round (David LaFleur in 1997), Barry Switzer was still head coach. But the current Cowboys are looking for playmakers on offense and Kincaid offers a unique profile. He could give Dak Prescott quick wins, like the aforementioned Schultz, while also providing more explosive potential with his seam and run-after-catch skills.
Of course, Kincaid is not the only draft prospect that mock drafts have linked to the Dallas Cowboys. It is not a foregone conclusion that Dallas will even address the position in the draft.
Still, it is worth noting that several draftniks see the Cowboys considering that route. Especially since Schultz is now officially on a different team.
Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot are capabale options at the position. Both flashed the ability to be reliable targets in the offense when Schultz was sidelined with injury last season. It stands reason to believe that those two can hold things down just fine.
Maybe the Dallas Cowboys are ready to unleash the duo of Ferguson and Hendershot. Or perhaps they just showed their hand with just one month until the 2023 NFL Draft kicks off.
