Last fall, the SEC directed the Tennessee Vols to postpone their matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners in 2024.
The reasoning was because Oklahoma and Texas are set to join the SEC soon and a non-conference game between the Vols and the Sooners would've presented some scheduling issues.
As a result, Tennessee had to begin searching for a non-conference opponent in 2024 — which was easier said than done as most of those matchups are set years in advance.
On Tuesday, Tennessee announced that they've found an opponent.
The Vols will take on the NC State Wolfpack in the Duke's Mayo Classic in Charlotte on September 7, 2024.
Tennessee and NC State most recently played each other in 2012, a game the Vols won 35-21 in Atlanta.
"We appreciate the Charlotte Sports Foundation and NC State on executing a game of this caliber on short notice," said athletic director Danny White in a statement. "This is another terrific opportunity for our football program and Vol Nation to showcase our brand in one of college football's perennial marquee contests."
Tennessee last played in Charlotte to open the 2018 season. The Vols lost to West Virginia 40-14 in the first game of the short-lived Jeremy Pruitt era.
