The Dallas Cowboys needed another wide receiver last off-season after parting ways with Amari Cooper.

When the third round of the NFL draft came about, the Cowboys took Jalen Tolbert out of South Alabama. Unfortunately, Dallas put a lot on his plate, and his development, which should have had more time to blossom, never got underway.

Tolbert was only active for eight games and registered just two receptions for 12 yards on 89 offensive snaps. However, Tolbert says it was something that was beneficial to him.

"This rookie year was by far the worst that I've had, and far from what I wanted for myself," said Tolbert. "But, you know, I know that I needed it, and God knows that I needed it and the coaches know that I needed it."

Tolbert certainly has a skill set that makes him an intriguing player.

During his collegiate days, Tolbert played every spot at receiver, giving him a vast knowledge of how to play the position, and the Cowboys love players with some flexibility to their arsenal.

Of course, things get more meticulous and nuanced on the professional level. So, although Tolbert certainly wanted to make more of an impact last season, used his time wisely.

"It was a good time for me to be able to adjust and get a grip for all positions," Tolbert said. "And, you know, in the future I can play inside out, go wherever is asked of me, play wherever they ask me to play. So, I'm excited to continue to grow there and just, continue to work."

The Cowboys have a bonified WR1 in CeeDee Lamb, a new speedster in veteran Brandin Cooks, and they'll have a healthy Michael Gallup in 2023. It's certain that they'll add another receiver in the draft, so Tolbert will have to battle to show his worth.

It's only year two for Tolbert so he has a great opportunity to shoot up the depth chart, and he appears to have the right mindset to make it happen.
